Displaying my father’s work at the beautiful and modern Umstead Hotel & Spa was a natural choice
Cary, NC (Vocus) October 25, 2009
The Umstead Hotel & Spa announces the new show in its in-house Art Gallery, featuring the work of late artist George Bireline. The curatorial staff at The Umstead has been working closely with the Bireline estate to coordinate a showing of available works, from a range of different periods in the artist’s life.
George Bireline (1923-2002) was a visionary North Carolina artist, and an integral part of the developing regional art scene in the middle to late part of the last century. A professor emeritus at the NCSU College of Design, Bireline is best known for his bright and intense color palette which he employed in his paintings in a number of styles. The Umstead is pleased to present a collection of works from his Abstract Expressionism period, and several of his benchmark Color Field paintings.
“Displaying my father’s work at the beautiful and modern Umstead Hotel & Spa was a natural choice”, commented daughter Lise Bireline. “These are treasures that my family has had in storage for many years, and it is wonderful to see them shown again in their full glory”.
George Bireline was embraced by the North Carolina art community during his lifetime. His works are in the permanent collections of the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, the Gallery of Art and Design at NCSU, the Duke University Museum of Art, and the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill.
The Umstead will offer a lecture on George Bireline’s life and artwork as part of its Art + Nature Lecture Series. On the evening of Wednesday, November 18th, Charlotte Brown, the Director of the Gallery of Art & Design at North Carolina State University will give an illustrated talk about this fascinating artist. Ms. Brown wrote the essay for the George Bireline Retrospective Show at the NC Museum of Art in the mid 1970s and was a close friend of the artist.
The Bireline Exhibit debuted on October 1, 2009 in the Umstead Art Gallery and will be shown through the end of January, 2010. For inquiries regarding the purchase of displayed artwork, or tickets to the Lecture and Cocktail Reception, please contact The Umstead Gift Shop at (919) 447-4065.
The Art + Nature Lecture Series is an ongoing discussion about Art and the world around us. Past presenters have included Seagrove potter Ben Owen, Atlanta-based painter Scott Upton, photographer Kim Kauffman, floral artist Steve Taras of Raleigh’s Watered Garden, and even the NC Opera Company. It is our goal to explore and broaden our knowledge of all varieties of art and nature through this sort of collaborative discussion. Limited to just 75 people per lecture, the series now has a loyal following of clients eager to expand their cultural horizons.
