The HoverMatt® transfer mattresses are inflated with a small air supply, as the mattress is inflated; air is escaping from thousands of perforated holes on the underside of the matt. It is the escaping air that acts to reduce friction making it seem as if a patient weighs about 10% of their actual weight.

The majority of transfers taking place in hospitals today are from one lateral surface to another; patients can be transferred in this matter 10 or more times within the first 48 hours of admission to hospital resulting in the risk of Musculoskeletal Injuries to caregivers from overexertion.
