Scott and Brigitte Rouleau, co-authors of Morsel Munk Word Stump, announce the receipt of the Moonbeam award. The Moonbeam Awards are intended to bring increased recognition to exemplary children's books and their creators, and are judged by expert panels of youth educators, librarians, booksellers, and book reviewers.
"This year's Moonbeam award winners confirm that books can change children's lives," says Moonbeam Awards founder Jerrold Jenkins, father of four children ranging in age from 7 to 17. "They've already had a big impact on the judges and the kids that read them, so we know these books were created to enrich children's lives. The Moonbeams are all about rewarding these books and bringing them to the attention of parents, booksellers, librarians - and to the kids themselves."
According to Scott and Brigitte, the Morsel Munk Word Stump (ISBN: 978-0-615-22730-6) concept is simple. They take words from the English language, break them down into component words, which are then swapped with synonyms, antonyms, or other words to create puzzle clues. As an example, the clue for "overnight" is "under-day". The clues get progressively harder throughout the book, often requiring use of a dictionary and thesaurus. The brainteasers are intended to improve spelling skills and vocabulary, and expand creativity.
The Moonbeam is the second children's book award for Morsel Munk Word Stump this year. In June, it was awarded a prestigious Preferred Choice Award in the 2009 Creative Child Awards program. Judging criteria is based on nurturing creativity and education in children.
According to Scott and Brigitte, "Though the awards are for children's books, Morsel Munk Word Stump has proven to be challenging for all ages. Children under the age of 12 typically benefit from assistance, which provides a great family bonding activity."
