Chicago, IL (PRWEB) October 28, 2009 -- Vets Prevail, an online resiliency training program and supportive veteran community from Prevail Health Solutions LLC, is proud to announce that its Twitter account, @VetsPrevail, has surpassed 1,000 followers. Vets Prevail serves the social media community as both a credible source of information and a vehicle to drive awareness and solidarity about deployment-related behavioral health issues.

To honor Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 4-10), @VetsPrevail posted a daily tip for veterans (#VetTip) dealing with combat stress, depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and for the families and friends who support them. VetTips included:

- If a loved one has PTSD, try to understand his/her triggers so that you can avoid a stressful situation before it occurs.
- Stay Connected. Social ties create purpose, meaning & the feeling of comradeship you had w/ fellow troops
- Make something a routine - even if it's just making your bed or walking the dog - it will create a sense of normalcy.

@VetsPrevail continues to post a VetTip each Wednesday and encourages others to post their own. In doing so, they deliver important and actionable information to veterans and their supporters, and raise awareness about combat stress. All too often, the return home for today's veterans presents serious challenges. Over a third of returning service members suffer from combat stress, depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other re-assimilation issues, while the suicide rate among veterans has climbed to a three-decade high. However, many veterans avoid seeking treatment because they fear the stigma attached to mental illness, or fear harming their military career. In using their Twitter account to promote awareness about behavioral health issues among veterans, Vets Prevail seeks to catalyze the online community to overcome this stigma and help connect veterans to the care that they need and deserve.
