Hartford Business Journal Participates in Disability Mentoring Day

The Hartford Business Journal in collaboration with The Connecticut Business Leadership Network (CTBLN) recently hosted students with disabilities from Bloomfield High School in honor of Disability Mentoring Day, a national event to commemorate Disability Awareness Month.

Hartford, CT (PRWEB) October 29, 2009 -- The Hartford Business Journal in collaboration with The Connecticut Business Leadership Network (CTBLN) recently hosted students with disabilities from Bloomfield High School in honor of Disability Mentoring Day, a national event to commemorate Disability Awareness Month.

CTBLN is a growing coalition of Connecticut employers working to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities and is presently funded by Connect-Ability.

Five students spent a day at the Hartford Business Journal office in downtown Hartford to experience a "day in the life" of the publication and to meet the professional staff. The day included a lesson on how businesses market in Hartford Business Journal news products, how the news is collected and how important it is to know what your readers want to read. The students also created their own ad design for a business of their choice.

"Our team really enjoyed sharing our workplace, our career paths and our challenges with these students," said Gail Lebert, Publisher of the Hartford Business Journal. "In committing to this, I totally underestimated the amount of enjoyment and satisfaction our team received. Each member of the staff beamed when they talked about their role in the company and how they got to this point in their career path."

Stephanie Urcinas, Human Resources Consultant, ConnectiCare, Inc. & Affilitates said: "I don't think that we can overestimate the power and value of people with disabilities being given an opportunity to see an actual work environment."

Lebert said she is eager to participate again next year: "It is energizing to be with the future leaders and future business people, to hear what's on their mind and how they are thinking."
