Austin, Texas (PRWEB) November 6, 2009
Orca Green Marine Technology Corporation (OGM) is celebrating seven years in business by emphasizing its commitment to the environment and the marine industry through its "Orca Green LED Lite EcoPac" initiative.
"We're very excited to celebrate this milestone, especially when emerging from this tough economic downturn with continued growth and with new LED products on the horizon," said Meghan Matthews, OGM's cofounder and CEO. "We owe thanks to our many boating customers, and our dedicated resellers and distribution partners. With their continued support, OGM has not only weathered this economic storm, but built a solid reputation in the industry as a leading LED lighting company focused on customer service, offering a full line of rugged LED marine lights."
Having been an early OGM customer for his sailboat, Convergence, Randy Repass, chairman of West Marine understands firsthand the need to conserve power consumption on long open water passages. "The reasons to be installing LED running and other lights are just as valid today as they were when OGM started," said Randy Repass. "Efficiency and longevity are important in a tough environment. Of course the lights have to be engineered and manufactured appropriately to hold up in that environment. I enjoyed our tricolor, anchor, "strobe" because it has worked reliably and been gentle on our batteries for our passage across the South Pacific to Australia."
OGM was founded in Austin, Texas, in November 2002 with the mission to bring environmentally friendly, energy efficient technologies to the marine industry. "We initially looked at fuel cell technology and LEDs," said Matthews, "but our research found that LED technology was developing much more rapidly than fuel cells, which has several obstacles yet to overcome. LEDs were advancing very quickly and in 2002, the reds, greens and whites were already primed for specific niche applications such as marine navigation lighting.
"We were green before green was cool," says Annette Escobar, longtime OGM employee and environmental advocate. "OGM's take is that the more 'green' catches on, the more we all win in the end, especially in the marine environment."
To encourage environmental awareness, OGM will migrate its plastic clamshell packaging to a more eco-friendly reusable packaging, aptly named Orca Green LED Lite EcoPacs. "Our first introduction of the EcoPac packaging concept was to bundle our set of LED Navigation lights in a canvas LLBean BoatTote and give a percentage of the sale to non-profit organizations dedicated to preserving our waterways," says Matthews. "But we decided to go one step further and make this commitment to reusable packaging a part of all our products going forward."
Orca Green will continue to examine its supply chain to reduce waste, investing in eco-friendly packaging, bundling and using recycled or reusable containers and other energy conservation products to offer a full solution to its growing number of customers. In the coming weeks, OGM will announce several new product offerings, each packaged in a reusable container ranging from lunch bags to stainless steel containers or coolers, all with an emphasis on "boater-reusable."
Randy Repass' visionary outlook and love of the ocean drives many of the product innovations that are carried by West Marine. "Congratulations on being one of the first to introduce approved LED running lights and now to be introducing sustainable packaging!, states Repass. "West Marine is working with our suppliers to get this widely implemented. We also believe in the triple bottom line (planet, people, profit) and sure wish the rest of businesses in the US and world did!"
"One of the reasons we love selling OGM lights is their dedication to the environment," said Cameron Murray, of Transmarine Pro, a mobile Renewable Energy Specialist, and OGM's East Coast Representative. "'Green' has always been more than just a part of their name, it's a part of who they are, what they sell and how they give back. At Transmarine Pro, we specialize in renewable energy and power-friendly equipment, so wherever we sail along the eastern seaboard and the Caribbean, we bring with us the firsthand knowledge and experience of using OGM's LED lights."
"We've learned a great deal in the first seven years and will continue working toward making a positive impact in the marine and other harsh environments, where striking a delicate balance between technology and the environment is critical," said Matthews.
