The ESU President's award is a highly coveted award that stands as a benchmark within the English language teaching industry. This award is one of the biggest events of its kind in the ELT calendar. The ceremony will be held in the palatial surroundings of Buckingham Palace on 12 November 2009.

Pearson Longman and Livemocha have, under fierce competition, scooped the title for Active English. Active English is an online community-based language learning course that uniquely combines the benefits of a structured ELT course with the rich practice opportunities provided by an online social networking experience, bringing together proven pedagogy and web 2.0.

Active English is a key part of Livemocha, a global language learning network for people who want to learn a foreign language with help from native speakers around the world on the Internet. Active English is a self-study course for English language learners who want to follow a more structured syllabus in order to meet their language goals faster, while still enjoying the social benefits offered by this online global community. Active English allows learners to study at their own pace, set their goals and share their work and success with fellow members of the community.

Pearson, the world's leading education company, and Livemocha, the world's largest online language learning community, announced a strategic agreement in March 2009. Livemocha in partnership with Pearson Longman launched Active English on 28 September 2009, and the service has since attracted interest from around the world due to its unique offering.

The ESU judges commented - "Livemocha is a website which is trying to reinvent the teaching of English. The panel were impressed by the site's genuine community feeling with user generated content. Students are able to gain feedback from native speakers and there is an excellent rating system within this feature. Livemocha makes great use of reciprocal peer learning. The panel were also impressed to see Web 2.0 being used in a meaningful way. The panel believes the evolution of the 'Teacher' section will make Livemocha an even more dynamic learning tool. The website is clear and easy to use and has a 'Facebook' feel to it. Live Mocha is a truly interactive resource that enables and encourages learners to be involved and stay involved in their own learning and that of the Livemocha community."

The team attending the award ceremony to pick up the award will be Dr Adam Black (Pearson Longman), Penny Humphries (Pearson Longman), Julia Bonnheim (Livemocha) and Siamak Poursabahian (Livemocha)
