A new law enacted last week expands the federal tax credit to move up homebuyers on purchases of qualifying new homes completed before July 1, 2010. In addition to this expansion, the program has been modified to extend the allowed time for first-time homebuyers and military personnel. Home buyers are eligible for a fully refundable federal tax credit of up to $6,500 on the purchase of a new residence, if they have owned and lived in their home for at least five consecutive years out of the last eight. First-time homebuyers are eligible for a credit of up to $8,000.
