International Tidal Energy Summit 2009 Attracts over 275 Executives

Over 275 executives have already confirmed their participation for the forthcoming 3rd International Tidal Energy Summit 2009. The two-day conference will be held in London on November 17 and 18th at Lords Cricket Ground in London, UK.

London, UK, (PRWEB) November 10, 2009 -- The third edition of Tidal Today's Tidal Energy Summit comes at a critical juncture when tidal power is gearing up for the commercial stage. Marine power technology companies acknowledge that tidal power turbines will need to provide their reliability and operational capability at a commercial scale (1+MW) in harsh ocean environments for a period of continuous use.

"Considering the current status of the industry, which definitely holds a lot of promise, it isn't surprising to find the eagerness and openess to learn about the relevant issues today. And the strength and calibre of the attendees for this Summit affirms this," said Tidal Today's director Abbie Badcock.

Cream of the industry

The conference will feature a strong speaker line-up. For instance, the "Government Support" session is scheduled to feature following speakers:

  • Alex Reid, Renewables Team, The Scottish Government
  • Ron Loveland, Director Energy Wales, The Welsh Assembly Government
  • Trevor Raggatt, Deputy Director- Bio Energy and Marine Energy Technologies, Department of Energy and Climate Change

Similarly, the Global Tidal Developers Power Panel is equally strong. It has following executives lined-up:

  • James Ives, Chief Executive, Open Hydro
  • Trey Taylor, Co-Founder and President, Verdant Power
  • Glen Darou, President and CEO, Clean Current Power Systems Inc.
  • Jochen Weilepp, Head of Ocean Energies, Voith Hydro
  • Timothy Cornelius, Chief Executive Officer, Atlantis Resources Corporation

Addressing international Tidal Energy development issues

In all, there will be over 20 sessions. The conference agenda tackles the major issues affecting the development of commercially viable tidal energy projects across the globe.

For example, from a tidal energy technology company's perspective, Atlantis Resources Corp believes that governments should focus on supporting developers in the short term through offsetting the cost of proving 1+MW systems for at least 24 months. The cost of deploying a commercial scale turbine and the associated transmission infrastructure required to evacuate power can be prohibitively expensive, hence merit based financial assistance is required to facilitate proof of commercial ready status, says Timothy Cornelius, CEO, Atlantis Resources Corp.

The conference will also provide an insight into the initiatives taken by the regulatory bodies in key markets.

US-based Verdant Power has mentioned that the current regulatory processes are being streamlined in the US, thanks to FERC's progressive attitude toward, and support for, tidal energy technology. However, the business environment in the US seems to be lagging behind that found in the UK and Canada, for example, says Trey Taylor, co-founder & president of the New York-based privately held company.

Taylor is scheduled to speak about why his company chose East River, New York, as a prime location for their tidal deployment in the US, benefits river current deployments hold in terms of O&M and decommissioning of tidal devices in contrast with deeper water locations and other critical issues.

A lot more is scheduled to be discussed in the forthcoming 3rd International Tidal Energy Summit 2009.
