Nearly Half of Americans Willing to Give Up An Average of 10 Years of Their Lives to Avoid Having Body Odor

Crystal™ Deodorant Survey Reveals Extreme Sacrifices to Avoid B.O. in Life and Love

"What surprised us was that so many people would take such extreme measures to avoid their own and others’ offensive smells"

Burlingame, CA (PRWEB) November 12, 2009 -- What is it worth to Americans to avoid being the smelly person in the room? The answer, for many, is an early death. A recent survey of 1000 men and women commissioned by Crystal™ Deodorant, discovered that 46 percent of respondents would shave an average of 10 years off of their lives to banish chronic body odor for life.

The survey also discovered a similarly extreme distaste for others' offensive body odor. Despite a recession and tight job market, 32 percent of respondents were willing to forgo either a bonus or salary increase in order to avoid a smelly cube mate for a year. Thirteen percent would quit their jobs altogether.
Among the other findings:

  • 85 percent of respondents would tolerate bad breath over bad body odor on a first date.
  • Americans would opt to gain an average of 17 pounds to avoid a lifetime of body odor.
  • 83 percent of Americans said that if they had bad body odor, they would choose NOT go out on a date with their favorite celebrity.

"Clearly we expected to find an aversion to body odor. What surprised us was that so many people would take such extreme measures to avoid their own and others' offensive smells," said Larry Friedberg, Vice President of Marketing for Crystal™. "There's an overemphasis in our society on physical appearance. But this survey clearly demonstrates that how we and others smell is under-emphasized."
