Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) November 13, 2009 -- Susan York, minimalist sculptor and assistant professor of art at the College of Santa Fe, delivered a guest lecture at the Santa Fe Art Institute on "Memory: Shadow and Light; Art as individual/collective memory." York is participating in the Santa Fe Art Institute's 2009 Visiting Artist and Lecture Season. The Santa Fe Art Institute is located on the College of Santa Fe campus.

"In elegant, spare drawings and complex, reductive sculptures and installations, Susan York has created a body of work that is a meditation on the forces of weight, mass, gravity and space. She uses elemental materials to present a contemplative experience for the viewer," said Diane Karp, executive director of the Santa Fe Art Institute. "Memory, both its presence and absence, is an important aspect of her work."

York represents a new generation of minimal artists. In Susan York, a catalog published by the Lannan Foundation, Karp wrote, "York is an artist-alchemist who transforms basic carbon in the form of graphite into something silvery and magical."

"The Santa Fe Art Institute and the College of Santa Fe have begun to build a unique relationship that joins the strengths of both organizations in the arts," Karp also said. "Together we can bring an expanded cultural dimension to our community as well as support and extend Santa Fe's creative work around the world."

"One of the keys to looking at and understanding my work is to be able to stop, take a breath, look quietly, and take it all in," said York. "My hope is that the viewer can savor this calm and experience the quiet, constant world of repetition that forms my work."

York's work will also be presented by Knoedler & Company (NY) at Art Basel Miami Beach, the prestigious international art fair that will take place Dec. 3-6, 2009, in Miami Beach, Fla.

York recently participated in an exhibit at the "Open Art 2009" show presented at the Galerie Renate Bender in Munich, Germany. "What's out there?" was an exhibition of minimalistic perspectives of contemporary art from five international artists from five different countries: Matt McClune, painting, United States/ France; Lars Strandh, painting, Sweden / Norway; Nick Terry, painting, United States; Beat Zoderer, sculpture, Switzerland; and Susan York, sculpture, United States.

York's work is represented in the collections of the Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe, N.M.; the Panza Collection in Lugano, Switzerland; and the Stedelijk Museum in the Netherlands. She is a 2007 recipient of a Joan Mitchell fellowship for painters and sculptors.
