Survival Against All Odds - An Explorer's Tale
Amazing story of 17 year old's Arctic survival mimics 2008 tale.
Montebello, CA (PRWEB) November 16, 2009 -- In a case of life imitating art, 17 year old Jupi Nakoolak’s amazing story of Arctic survival mimics the 2008 novel, On God's Lake.
Author Olivia C. Grosser's tale provides a first-hand account of one youth's harrowing ordeal lost in the Arctic wilderness on Hudson Bay. The similarities between the book and Jupi's November 9 rescue are quite remarkable. While Jupi set out for a day of hunting with his 67 year old uncle, the youth in On God's Lake survived a fiery plane crash only to suffer a set of circumstances almost identical to those of Jupi.
Setting off on foot towards the nearest community, the protagonist commandeers a snowmobile which breaks down when it becomes stuck on the lip of some jagged ice. Almost instantly, the silent void is filled with the sound of glass smashing against glass as the ice gives way. Stranded on an ice floe not unlike Jupi, the protagonist drifts helplessly through savage storms and lives on the carcasses of raw fish and birds. Then; two words change life, as it is, forever.
Polar Bear!
The words ring in the ears before the brain has time to register the seven hundred-pound threat. There, but a few feet away, is the “White Terror”. So-named for its ability to strike fear into anyone and anything, the bear and youth share the same patch of ice, each ravenously hungry and desperate to survive. Night time is filled with night-terrors; the stomach-churning dread that each moment might be the last.
Hope comes in the form of an age-old explorer's legend – but is it too little, too late?
If you believe in the power of miracles, believe in On God's Lake.
