Infohrm Survey Predicts Increasing Investment in Workforce Planning for 2010

Findings from the 2009 Global Workforce Planning Survey Illustrate How Business Leaders are Integrating Workforce Planning, Risk Management, and Financial Modeling

Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 13, 2009 -- In one of the largest workforce planning studies ever conducted, almost fifty percent of the 780 respondents expect their investment in workforce planning to increase across the next 12 months. Produced by Infohrm, the global leader in workforce planning, reporting and analytics solutions, the 2009 survey entitled "Workforce Planning: Securing HR's Role in the Business" investigates what structures, practices, and outcomes differentiate leading workforce planning organizations from their peers.

Infohrm identified thirty-two Leading organizations that, in meeting four key criteria for workforce planning, are able to:

  • Communicate that workforce planning is highly valuable to the business
  • Demonstrate the impact of workforce planning
  • Measure the return-on-investment (ROI) of workforce planning
  • Use workforce planning as a strategy for competitive advantage

Key Findings

In contrast to their peers, Leading organizations are significantly more proficient in aligning workforce planning with risk management and strategic business cycles, and in implementing early-warning systems that alert business leaders to changes in key metrics. Consistent with Infohrm's approach to workforce planning, Leading organizations are also more effective in:

  • Using a Center of Excellence structure that integrates workforce planning activities across the organization
  • Creating multiple risk-based scenarios that aggregate internal and external business drivers
  • Seeking out workforce planning staff with strong business skills
  • Adopting advanced technologies to create, manage, and disseminate business unit- or job family-specific forecasts
  • Drawing from a diverse range of talent management strategies to address high-priority risks
  • Focusing planning practices on proactive business growth, rather than reactive workforce, decisions

Across the full survey, it is clear that organizations do not achieve best practice in workforce planning based solely on experience. Instead, organizations that follow a time-tested methodology for implementing workforce planning are more likely to be successful than those adopting an ad-hoc approach.

"Effective workforce planning is one of the critical human capital practices that will position organisations for success as they emerge from the current economic cycle," said Brian Kelly, President of Infohrm North America. "The results of our global survey illustrate how senior executives with talent management responsibilities are using advanced workforce models, analytics, and technologies to manage operational risks and drive competitive advantage."

A copy of the full survey findings can be found in the Infohrm Research & Information Center.
