Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hosts Houston Stop for Children’s Miracle Network Torch Relay
Marriott Houston-Area Hotels “Spirit to Serve Our Communities” Supports Children’s Miracle Network Fundraising Event to Benefit Texas Children’s Hospital; Marriott Employee Team Sets $26K Goal
Houston, TX (PRWEB) November 13, 2009 -- As part of Marriott International’s “Spirit to Serve Our Communities” commitment of corporate social responsibility, the Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center is sponsoring and hosting the fourth annual Houston stop of the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) “Miles for Miracles Torch Relay” this Sunday November 15 starting at 9:00 a.m.
The 5k fundraising walk/run will start and finish at the hotel, located at 1601 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, Texas, with donations supporting Texas Children’s Hospital, which is part of the CMN. Participants, volunteers and event officials will visit with local celebrities and, after the race, enjoy food and refreshments from local sponsors.
A 100-member team comprised of Houston-area Marriott employees will participate and have set a $26,000 fundraising goal. Since 2005, the nationwide torch relay of athletic events has raised more than $5 million. The 2009 relay is stopping in dozens of cities during October and November, and has a fundraising goal of $1.25 million.
“Marriott is a 26 year nationwide sponsor of Children’s Miracle Network and has donated more than $58 million to 170 affiliated hospitals in the United States and Canada,” said Fred Domenick, general manager of the Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center. “Our local support for Texas Children’s Hospital is a concrete example of how Marriott’s company-wide spirit to serve the community translates into real local action by our hotels and their employees.”
Marriott’s “Spirit to Serve Our Communities”
Marriott International’s “Spirit to Serve Our Communities” corporate social responsibility initiative is designed to SERVE five key areas: Shelter and food; Environment; Readiness for hotel careers; Vitality of Children; and Embracing global diversity and inclusion.
In 1983, Marriott became Children’s Miracle Network’s first corporate sponsor. Marriott's early sponsorship helped lend credibility to CMN. In 1993, “Marriott Pride” was created to give employees an opportunity to get involved and help raise money for the children in their communities.
Marriott Pride supports the company’s business units, franchise partners and Marriott-branded hotels, Business Councils, and employees in North America to help raise funds for CMN. This initiative calls upon and enables all of these stakeholders to work with their local CMN children's hospitals on grass roots fundraising efforts.
The money raised by Marriott employees at this event is just the latest chapter in the Houston-area Marriott hotels’ longstanding involvement with CMN and the Texas Children’s Hospital. In the past, Houston-area Marriotts have hosted a fundraising golf tournament for CMN.

Sunday’s Event
Participants in Sunday’s “Miles for Miracles Torch Relay” event will mingle with the Texas Children Hospital sponsored family before the start. After the event, participants will enjoy food and refreshments from The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.
