A proprietary new technology developed by Atlanta EDM & Machine Co. has successfully blended custom EDM machining and lights-out automation for greater speed and accuracy for medical industry components. Many of the problems with production electrical discharge machining (EDM) involve bores and net geometry that need to be cut over tall blanks. Even if the resulting parts are thin, the economy of scale dictates a stacking of thin parts for cost efficiency. Many times the EDM will cut parts stacked on top of each other as high as 50 tall. Cutting 50 high at one time is efficient, but it can cause problems like tapers of holes or inaccurate profiles. Atlanta EDM’s proprietary technology has pushed the limit of the machines with break-neck speed while yielding accurate and consistent parts over a high-production volume. These thin, flat parts, which require tolerances as fine as .0002”, are routinely grouped and cut over these tall spans of material yielding accurate and cost effective parts.

Fast settings that maintain accuracy is only one of the EDM machining components used in making medical components; the other is an extensive investment in the automation tooling and management software that maximizes use of all the electrical discharge machining capital investments.
