ChemArt Takes a Green Initiative Through Its In-House Green Team

ChemArt (http://www.chemart.com) is always looking for ways to be innovative, and in 2009 decided to focus on more environmentally-sound personal and manufacturing practices by launching a "green" initiative. Over the past year, ChemArt has taken both big and small steps to ensure that the company is environmentally friendly. "We believe this is imperative as everyone should do what they can to help our environment", says Kurt Hague, General Counsel and head of the internal "Green Team" at ChemArt. ChemArt has, in fact, been doing several "green" initiatives over the years:
-
ChemArt recycles over 87,000 pounds of metal, and purchases approximately 250,000 pounds of metal comprised of 25% recycled metal every year.
- Between 1998 and 2002, ChemArt reduced water usage by 46%, metal hydroxide waste by 55%, and waste treatment chemicals by 51%. This water reduction of 40,000 gallons a day to 10,000 gallons a day earned ChemArt the Senator John H. Chafee Outstanding Conservation award, making it the only company in the manufacturing industry to receive it.
- Ceiling fans recently installed in ChemArt's assembly area are predicted to reduce natural gas consumption by 20%.
- ChemArt's packed-bed air scrubber removes 98% of the chlorides previously discharged into the environment.
- Beginning January 2008, ChemArt had been sending ferric chloride waste to a recycling facility instead of a traditional hazard waste disposal facility. Each year going forward, ChemArt expects to send 90,000 gallons to be recycled each year. This process reclaims and recycles the metal in the waste, leaving only wastewater, which is sufficiently benign to be discharged into the facilities sewer system.
Some other recent initiatives ChemArt has taken include:
- Reducing plastic waste by a ton a month
- Retrofitting one of the two buildings with energy-efficient lighting
- Recycling all eligible paper, plastic, glass bottles and aluminum cans
- Using ceramic mugs and plastic bottles instead of disposable options for coffee and water
ChemArt is continuing to look for new ways to reduce energy consumption by working with its electricity supplier and using their internal "Green Team" to review the company's resource consumption and waste production.
