K’NEX Brands, one of the world’s leading construction toy manufacturers, has chosen Alex Liao as one of the Grand Prize winners of its 2010 K’NEXpert Search. The nationwide search asks kids ages 5-12 to submit original designs made entirely out of K’NEX pieces. Alex is six years old and lives with his parents in Waterloo, ON, Canada.

Alex won in the 5-6 year-old category with his model called Eureka, a Mars rover complete with an extendable arm and four independent rear wheels for stability.

K’NEX awarded three Grand Prize winners – one from each of three age categories – in this years’ contest. In addition to Alex, Grand Prize winners include 8-year-old Connor Garmey from Severna Park, MD, and 12-year-old Ian Culhane of Olympia, WA. Each of the boys will be awarded a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond to be used for their education. In addition, the seven finalists will each be awarded $1,000 Savings Bonds.

The three Grand Prize winners will visit K’NEX headquarters in Hatfield, PA on December 1. As guests of K’NEX President Michael Araten the winners will receive their award checks, enjoy a lunch with K’NEX designers and take a private factory tour. Their award-winning models will be displayed at K’NEX headquarters.

“The K’NEXpert contest is the highlight of our year,” said K’NEX President Michael Araten. “K’NEX fans consistently surpass our expectations with their creativity and innovation, building elaborate works of art,” he said.
