Web's Leading Smart Grid Site Opens New Channel in Support of the National Effort to Electrify Transportation

On the heels of Monday's high-profile Electrification Roadmap announcement, Smart Grid News, the Web's largest and highest-ranked smart grid site, announced the launch of a special channel devoted to the information needs of the nation's utilities, who must upgrade their systems before electric transportation can become a reality.

The nation's utilities are woefully unprepared for the advent of electric transportation, a situation highlighted in this week's Electrification Roadmap announcement from a coalition of industry leaders that includes Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn and Frederick W. Smith, Chairman, President and CEO of FedEx Corp. That situation is also the impetus for the all-new Electric Transportation channel launched by Smart Grid News, a leading Web resource for today's utility professionals. The new channel is sponsored by Horizon Energy Group.

"The grid was not designed as part of the transportation system," explained Sam Ori, Director of Policy, Securing American's Future Energy (SAFE), a nonpartisan not-for-profit working to reduce dependence on oil. "Utilities will have to upgrade technology, replace transformers and seek innovative regulatory treatment to serve this new business."

"These imperatives create an urgent need for information tailored to the special needs of utilities," notes Jesse Berst, Founding Editor of Smart Grid News. "Because the lion's share of our audience is comprised of utility professionals and the folks who regulate them, we're in the right place at the right time to provide the expert advice and resources utilities will need to develop their electric transportation strategies and purchase and implement the best technologies."

In addition to timely analysis of news and trends in the electric transportation sector, the new channel features a rich resource library that includes in-depth studies and white papers from leading organizations within the industry, plus relevant videos, product announcements and press releases. To launch the channel, Smart Grid News just published a "getting started primer" with links to other important Web resources and must-see content.

"It's like trying to upgrade a moving train," said Horizon Energy Group's Joe Miller, who leads the Department of Energy's Smart Grid Implementation Strategy team at the National Energy Technology Laboratory. "Utilities must incorporate new technologies and approaches while still keeping the lights on 24x7. We applaud the efforts of Smart Grid News to provide this much needed hub for information and resources."

"We certainly appreciate the role Horizon Energy Group has played in supporting this new resource for the utility industry," Berst noted. "They've been a valued partner of Smart Grid News for many years now."
