The Sustainable Manufacturing Award category is part of the Business Times' Manufacturer of the Year Awards, which honors local companies who have manufacturing facilities in the Pittsburgh area and surrounding communities. Thorley Industries, a juvenile products manufacturer, has been selected by the Pittsburgh Business Times as a finalist for the 2009 Sustainable Manufacturing Award at its Manufacturer of the Year Awards.

Thorley Industries, headquartered in Pittsburgh, is a four-year-old company that develops a suite of four juvenile products under the brand name “4moms” that are sold nationwide. Each product introduces new and highly innovative concepts for the $7.0 billion juvenile market in the U.S.

The sustainability category honors companies that create sustainable products or methods. This could be energy-efficient, green facilities or groundbreaking new products. Thorley Industries has developed an innovative new stroller that uses green parts, power-folds at the push of a button, recharges itself and is 90% recyclable.

The use of low-cost electronics and robotics technology has enabled Thorley Industries to develop products that set it apart from other consumer product manufacturers. The Thorley team has made it a point to reduce battery size and use in its stroller and infant swing, while applying innovative concepts to real-world consumer products.

The Manufacturer of the Year Award raises awareness of the importance of the region’s manufacturing sector, according to Pittsburgh Business Times Marketing Director, Richard Cerilli. The awards will highlight the best examples of manufacturing strength in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities.

The Pittsburgh Business Times will announce the Manufacturer of the Year at an awards dinner on December 3 at the Omni William Penn Hotel.
