Gatherings With Purpose Contest
Five national finalists are in the running for Modern Woodmen of America’s Gatherings with Purpose giveaway. The gathering earning the most votes in the online contest will win the grand prize - $2,500 in cash for the entrant, plus a $2,500 donation for the worthy cause described in his or her submitted story.
Nearly 100 stories were submitted in the online contest. The stories spotlighted families and friends who volunteered together to meet a community need, raised money for a local cause or added a volunteer activity to a social gathering.
Visitors can vote daily through Dec. 6, 2009. The five finalists include:
Judith Alton, Hartland, Maine, who submitted the gatherings organized by the Hartland Community Swimming Pool Committee. The dances and auctions supported the efforts of the committee to complete and maintain the community swimming pool to provide a positive activity and exercise for children in the small town.
Cheri Archibald, Oakley, Idaho, who shared the story of a group of family and friends who gathered on Veterans Day to write letters and assemble 1,150 Christmas packages to be sent to America’s troops serving overseas.
Sarah Herr, Bettendorf, Iowa, who shared the story of the Pleasant Valley High School cheerleaders’ gatherings to form and fund the Spartan Sparkles, a high school-based cheerleading squad designed to include students with special needs. The project works in conjunction with Hand-in-Hand, a nonprofit organization providing critical services to families with special needs.
Jodie Johnson, Bethlehem, Pa., who nominated the Northeast Bethlehem Raiders youth football team for gathering to improve their playing fields and to support the family of a 9-year-old teammate who died unexpectedly.
Rebecca A. Slattman, Defiance, Ohio, who nominated a group of volunteers for organizing a successful carnival to benefit 9-year-old Tiana Bishop and her family. Tiana is battling rhabdomyoscarcoma, a form of cancer.

Modern Woodmen members nationwide gather for good through local camps (chapters) and youth service clubs. The giveaway was launched to complement national efforts to bring people together to help others and meet needs in their local communities. Modern Woodmen sells financial products not to benefit stockholders, but to support our stakeholders – members, their families and their communities. How? Through social, charitable and volunteer events where our members gather.
Founded in 1883, Modern Woodmen of America touches lives and secures futures. The fraternal benefit society offers financial services and fraternal member benefits to individuals and families throughout the United States.
