DOE Clean Fuel Grant and Propane Facts:
§ DOE awarded Texas State Technical College and grant partner, CleanFUEL USA, $12.3 million to develop over 184 liquid propane refueling stations in 16 major cities along high-traffic interchanges and highways across the country. The initiative also supports the purchase of propane vehicles and provides for an innovative outreach program to retrain and certify out of work or at-risk service technicians and U.S. veterans for work in alternative fuel industries. DOE estimates that the project will help displace more than 3 million gallons of petroleum annually.
§ Propane projects received over $33.5 million under the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to transform the nation’s vehicle fleets to support job creation, improve the environment, and reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
§ Propane is a low-carbon fuel and the cleanest-burning alternative fuel for fleet vehicles today. It also offers greater cost-efficiency, typically 40-50 percent less than gasoline/diesel per gallon.
§ Roughly 97 percent of propane used in the U.S. is produced in North America. Greater utilization of abundant alternative fuels, such as propane, can help the U.S. decrease its dependence on foreign oil.
