The Joint Commission and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office for Civil Rights have partnered to support language access in healthcare organizations. In a recently released video, entitled Improving Patient-Provider Communication: Joint Commission Standards and Federal Laws, one of several points addressed is the obligation of healthcare organizations with respect to the translation of written documents. The video is one of several resources supporting the Joint Commission's development of hospital accreditation standards aimed at advancing effective communication, cultural competence, and patient- and family-centered care in hospitals.
