Numbers indicate that the average order totals have increased by more than 100% over last year for some clients; a trend that indicates online shoppers are starting the holiday season earlier than normal.

Today, a consumer can use a mobile app to take a picture of an item in-store and find comparable prices online. It's a reality that more shopping activity is happening in the digital channel. Retailers must adapt their strategy and invest in running a successful digital store just as much as they do with their brick-and-mortar establishment.

Acquity Group, a leading services firm focused on digital solutions, reported today that many clients leveraging its proprietary Commerce OnDemand® platform have experienced a huge surge in online holiday sales to date.

While the Wall Street Journal reports that Cyber Monday saw shoppers spending 11% more than they did a year ago at this time, Acquity Group clients averaged a more than 30% increase on Cyber Monday alone.

Acquity Group's data, compiled from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1, also indicates that unlike the 2008 holiday shopping season when most of the shopping activity took place on Cyber Monday, this year the distribution was more widespread.

"There was a shift of orders to the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and even Thanksgiving day," said Andrew Tubbs, Acquity Group Vice President of Managed Services. "We saw retailers promoting their discounts and sales before and after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In reality, it became more like a 72-hour Black Friday."

Within the six-day period, Acquity Group clients saw a dramatic 88% increase in total order size and an average of 85% increase in total sales compared to last year.

Tubbs attributes this increase in sales to several factors, among which is a strong coordination between marketing activity promoting deeper discounts to entice customers, along with a stable online payment platform that made holiday purchases easy.

"Having an attractive online presence with a reliable eCommerce platform, as well as a complementary mobile strategy, is more critical than ever," said Tom Nawara, Acquity Group Director of Digital Strategy & Design. "Today, a consumer can use a mobile app to take a picture of an item in-store and find comparable prices online. It's a reality that more shopping activity is happening in the digital channel. Retailers must adapt their strategy and invest in running a successful digital store just as much as they do with their brick-and-mortar establishment."

While some news reports indicate there were several eCommerce sites that experienced glitches in web stability throughout Black Friday and Cyber Monday -- resulting in lost sales opportunities -- Acquity Group maintained stable eCommerce platforms for its clients throughout some of the heaviest trafficked days of the year.

"Our customers by far outperform the rest of the industry, as evidenced by these terrific numbers," said Tubbs. "When retailers plan for online shopping, they have to consider the ease-of-use, website availability, and cart checkout process, among other things. If you don't make the online experience intuitive and reliable for consumers, they're going to abandon your site and make their purchases elsewhere."
