Average donors can't change systemic poverty, but they can change a life.

WideAwake.org unveils an online charitable marketplace and community where individuals can find, support, and get involved with local grassroots charity efforts in developing areas of the world.

The Web site features video, pictures, and information about thirteen grassroots Affiliate organizations in eleven countries, as well as details about the specific projects that the organizations need help funding. The result is a marketplace of charitable projects where donors can choose to support those that matter to them the most.

All WideAwake.org Affiliates are small, effective, local charities that have been scrutinized for ethical practices and efficient use of funds. “Our Affiliates are the kinds of organizations that most people might only hear about through a friend or personal experience. WideAwake.org provides that connection and makes it easy for anyone to find amazing grassroots efforts throughout the world,” says co-founder Brian Manning.

WideAwake.org represents a fresh approach to online giving and international charity. By connecting individuals directly to its Affiliates, WideAwake.org eliminates the waste and potential for fraud that is present in many existing international aid programs. Traditionally, donations pass through several different organizations – introducing additional risk and expense at every step – before ultimately reaching those in need. WideAwake.org removes these multiple layers and is therefore able to drastically reduce the expense of giving internationally.

Unlike most international charities that openly take 10-50% or more of a donation in fees, WideAwake.org pledges that fully 100% of gifts made to WideAwake.org Affiliates will reach those organizations. “We keep our overhead low by leveraging technology,” explains co-founder and President Frank McCawley, “and our unique all-volunteer management team allows us to operate much more efficiently than a traditional charity.” All operating expenses are funded by donations specifically targeted for that purpose.

WideAwake.org was founded upon the belief that tales of rampant abuse, waste and fraud have become so commonplace that many otherwise willing donors have begun to withhold their funding. Additionally, the futility felt when donating to larger non-profits does not encourage giving from those with modest resources.

By putting people in touch with small organizations that do effective work in places where the U.S. dollar has enormous purchasing power, WideAwake.org has created a safe place to give where even small gifts can have a substantial impact.

“Average donors can’t change systemic poverty,” says co-founder Megan Pate, “but they can change a life.”
