Midbrook Lab Testing Provides Results for Cleaning Process Develop and Verification

The customer needed to find an efficient way to clean scrap metal chips – before they continued in the reclamation process

Midbrook, Inc, a Jackson, MI-based company, is home to an advanced technology center laboratory that performs a wide variety of tasks for clients.

The Midbrook Technology Center is stocked with cutting-edge equipment for conducting cleanliness tests, developing cleaning processes, and testing to various international standards such as ISO 16232.

Three recent cases handled by the Midbrook Laboratory demonstrate the wide ranging abilities of the Technology staff to handle problems presented by their clients.

In the first case, a major recycling company needed assistance with their cleaning process development.

“The customer needed to find an efficient way to clean scrap metal chips – before they continued in the reclamation process,” said Midbrook Tech Lab Representative Paul Hutchison.

The Technology Lab brought in samples of the material that the customer needed to clean.

“We knew a rotary drum washer was going to clean the chips, so we needed to develop a process that worked in that washer style.” said Technology Center Director Jack Griffes.

The lab constructed a simulation of a Midbrook Hurricane parts washer that the company had already installed in their facility.

“We produced a small rotating basket with internal headers as a small simulator,” said Griffes. Midbrook’s simulated process met the expectations of the customer, and was the first step in creating an effective cleaning process for them.

In another instance, Midbrook helped a major manufacturer of brake shoes to develop a cleaning chemistry to improve their production process. The chemistry they had been using to etch the shoes was sporadically ineffective, and they wished to find a chemistry that could combine the washing/etching process into one step and save time.

“Essentially, we simulated the process of their proposed washer with various chemistries to determine which of the chemistries provided them with the desired result,” said Griffes.

Finally, a major tube fitting manufacturer needed help developing rust prevention chemistry.

“The customer was facing a challenge with rust forming on their product,” said Paul Hutchison. “We were contacted to help them resolve the issue.”

Since the rust was already an issue, Midbrook had to find a quick solution to help the customer. The laboratory needed to speed up their testing but retain accuracy in order to get a customer a timely solution.

Rust prevention (RP) can be difficult to test – sometimes customers want it to last two years, and most people won’t wait two years for testing to be finished,” said Griffes.

“You need to accelerate the time before corrosion occurs in a controlled manner so that you can use or establish a correlation between your accelerated test and real world testing,” said Griffes.

“If they need a month of RP protection, or even 10-14 days – using the humidity cabinet can give speedier results which makes for a quicker decision making process – which is particularly important if perhaps the customer inquiry is being made because they are currently having rust issues.”

The technology available in the lab, from the humidity cabinets to the advanced Filtrex Microscope, provide Griffes and his staff with the tools necessary to perform the wide-ranging variety of tests necessary.
