Boston Utilizes SentriLock Lockbox System to Allow Secure Access to Shared Bikes

SentriLock the fastest-growing and number-one rated provider of electronic lockbox and access control systems, has formed a partnership with Boston Bikes, an initiative of the City of Boston, to support its employee bike pool program with electronic key lockboxes.

Nicole Freedman, Director, Boston Bikes, said “The City of Boston’s bike pool is part of Mayor Menino’s commitment to making Boston a world-class biking city. City of Boston employees can lead by example. And have a bit of fun, too.” Nine locations and more than 30 bicycles are now available for City of Boston employees to use for work-related travel.

The bikes, valued at $50,000, were donated by Giant Bicycle. “Giant is happy to partner with Boston in the bike pool program,” said Elysa Walk, General Manager of Giant Bicycle, Inc. “Cities across America should follow Boston’s lead and show their residents, by example, that most short trips can be taken by bike and save everyone time, energy, and money.”

Part of the success of the program relies on the ease of accessing a bike for use, while still keeping the bikes secure from theft. That is where SentriLock steps in with a key lockbox that has an illuminated keypad to facilitate access.

Brent Borel, Manager of Strategic Alliances at SentriLock, states: “While SentriLock’s electronic lockbox systems are primarily designed for the residential real estate market, where they are used by more than 250,000 real estate agents across North America, Boston Bikes has found our One Day Code functionality – an exclusive feature of the system – to be perfect for their needs.”

A member of the bike pool receives a unique code to open the SentriLock lockbox and obtain the bike lock key. Unlike standard mechanical combination lockboxes, the codes on the SentriLock lockbox are digitally tracked and automatically change daily, protecting against unauthorized repeated use. “The pairing of security and ease of use is a perfect fit for the bike pool,” said Freedman.
Borel stated, “SentriLock is very happy to provide our technology to help both the economy and ecology of our country’s largest cities. We are ready to assist similar programs across the globe that have an interest in this application and welcome any inquiries. We wish Mayor Menino’s Boston Bikes continued success with this admirable and highly useful program.”
