Plano, Texas (PRWEB) December 7, 2009
In an effort to learn more about the region and its athletes, Dave Young, Chairman of the USAT South Midwest Region Council, accomplished his goal of competing in 50 multi-sport races within the 2009 race season.
In total, Young competed in 39 triathlons, 10 duathlons, and one aquabike. Two of the duathlons were off-road and three of the triathlons were XTERRA races. According to Young, the mountain biking “took me out of my comfort zone—but what a blast learning and trying something new!” All of the races were sanctioned by USAT and took place within the South Midwest Region that includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Young encourages other Regional Chairs to challenge themselves to a similar accomplishment. However, he admits that it may not be feasible to compete in the same quantity of races in some of the regions that have shorter race seasons. Young explains, “In the SMW we are blessed with a longer racing season and over 300 USAT races.”
Apparently 50 races did not satisfy Young’s appetite for competition. On November 29th, the 60-year-old triathlete completed his eleventh Ironman in Cozumel, Mexico. And in 2010, Young will be representing the United States in the Long Course Triathlon World Championships that will be held in Immenstadt, Germany next summer.
When he is not competing in or training for races, Young enjoys coaching a Masters swim team and spending time with his girlfriend, Lou Knowles, who is also an active triathlete. According to Young, Knowles supports his passion for competition as she cheers at the finish line and occasionally pokes fun at his seemingly endless ambition.
Young is employed as the store manager for the Kiefer Swim Shop in Plano, Texas. The Midwest-based company is proud of Young’s athletic achievements. According to Kiefer’s President, Bill Fischer, “We have a number of accomplished athletes on staff here at Kiefer. Their knowledge and passion for sports helps fuel the internal drive of the company.” In fact, Adolph Kiefer and Associates was founded in 1947 by 1936 Olympic Gold Medalist Adolph Kiefer, who at 91 years of age reports to the office everyday. Fischer exclaims, “If that is not drive, I don’t know what is!”
