Positron Access Solutions Inc. announced today that the City of Martinsville, Virginia, is using their AEX-50 Pseudowire product to combine data and voice traffic on a converged all IP network.

The City of Martinsville operates its own telecommunications network. It provides data and voice services to city locations as well as local businesses. Over the past several years, the City has been migrating from a SONET/TDM network to a more cost-effective Ethernet/IP network. At present, the City has Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) running between many of their main city sites such as the city hall, fire station, police station, schools and libraries. The City has moved to VoIP while maintaining a SONET ring serving TDM.

The City of Martinsville chose the AEX-50 to converge multiple services for their business customers onto a GigE (or IP) fiber backbone, thus optimizing their use of their fiber facilities.

“As we built our Ethernet/IP network, we needed to be able to continue offering T1s to our customer base,” explains Mike Scaffidi, Telecommunications Manager for City of Martinsville. “T1s didn’t justify extending the SONET ring, therefore, to solve our problem we selected the Positron AEX-50 Pseudowire product to deliver T1s and to backhaul the traffic over Ethernet to a central office location.” Scaffidi adds, “Positron’s AEX-50 allowed us to cost effectively optimize the use of our fiber facilities and deliver converged services to our customer base.”

The scenario at the City of Martinsville is fairly common given that service providers are seeking efficiency and cost-effective ways of delivering bandwidth; therefore they are migrating to Ethernet. However, as networks migrate to Ethernet, providers still need to deliver legacy TDM services. The Positron AEX-50 and AEX-100 products can service a variety of interfaces delivering TDM over an Ethernet infrastructure including T1s, DS3, and OC-x. With the use of Positron AEX products, a service provider can migrate to Ethernet while offering a full suite of legacy TDM services.

“Positron’s AEX-50 uses MEF-compliant Pseudowire technology to effectively converge voice/TDM traffic and Ethernet traffic over fiber-based GigE fiber networks,” explains Hossam Salib, VP, Product Management and Marketing for Positron Access. “The AEX-50 incorporates extensive traffic management and control features to effectively manage traffic at the edge of an all IP network, and is compliant with Y.1731 and Service OAM standards.”
