The cloud continues making inroads from the planning room to the construction site

Motion has developed a partnership with Box.net to enhance the productivity benefits of our tablet PC solutions

Box.net, provider of online collaboration services, today announced it is now a software alliance partner of Motion Computing®, a leading provider of integrated mobile computing solutions. Motion® will now resell Box.net, which will enable its construction customers to share, access and manage plan files from the field with Motion's complete line of tablet PCs.

Box.net also unveiled today its new construction microsite at http://www.box.net/construction to help construction professionals understand how they can deploy Box.net to their advantage. The site features stories about well-known architecture, construction, development and engineering companies using Box.net to better run their businesses.

A typical construction project can bring together 15 different consultants - all needing to work together. The need to share hundreds of files between everyone involved is driving construction firms to ditch fax, snail mail and FTP for more sophisticated, cloud-based collaboration technology. Helping drive the construction industry towards the cloud, Box.net is working to provide contractors and construction companies with the best in online collaboration and content management to reduce project expenses, shorten lead times and ensure easy collaboration among all stakeholders in a project's success.

"Motion has developed a partnership with Box.net to enhance the productivity benefits of our tablet PC solutions," said Imran Ulla, director of strategic alliances at Motion Computing. "Through our alliance, Motion is providing our construction customers the ability to streamline project management by more seamlessly working with colleagues throughout the various phases of their projects, from the work site."

Box.net's flexible solution currently helps more than 50,000 businesses easily share content, move company file systems online, and create team workspaces. Construction firms commonly implement Box.net to replace FTP servers, but Box provides features above and beyond simple file sharing, such as the ability to edit and comment on files as well as facilitate electronic bid management, all online. Ultimately, Box.net serves as a web-based electronic planroom where files are stored, shared and worked on with colleagues and contractors throughout the design, bid and construction stages of a project.

For example, rather than use email or snail mail to send documents, Surprise Development Corp., a San Francisco-based real estate developer, uses Box.net to easily share and collaborate with a variety of project partners. "We've gotten smarter and more efficient using the cloud," said Suneet Singala, project manager.

Surprise Development Corp. is part of a growing trend of construction firms moving towards cloud-based collaboration to bring a project to fruition. According to Software Advice's Construction Software State of the Industry Report , software-as-a-service is increasing in many markets, including project management "where there is a clear need for the collaborative benefits of web-based software."
