Orlando Bachelor John D. Smith tired of online dating so he decided to do something outside the box instead. John's advertising vehicle turned out to be a giant 40 foot freeway billboard in Downtown Orlando. "In real estate, location is everything," Smith says. "I chose this location because over 100,000 cars pass it every day. I thought that at least one of those vehicles would have an 'everyday matchmaker' to refer me a single girlfriend."
John's billboard message is simple: Help John find love.com. If you refer him to a single girlfriend who turns out to be his long-term girlfriend, he'll pay you $1,000. When you're 41 and tired of striking out at love, what have you got to lose? "I'm self-employed and own Storm Stoppers, so I don't meet people at work," said Smith. "So "I thought, If I'm going to do this, I'm doing to do it full-bore."
John came up with the idea on Halloween. He created a website, http://www.helpjohnfindlove.com so prospective dates and their matchmaker friends could learn about him. "For this to work, I knew i'd have to put myself out there. There's nothing more bold than a 40 foot billboard."
Thusfar, Smith has had several dates from his billboard approach. "I've met women i wouldn't have met otherwise and the experience has been a very positive one." Smith says he is particularly looking for a nonsmoker, a dog lover and someone with a sense of adventure. Next June 1, Smith hopes to announce whom he has selected as his serious girlfriend and award the $1,000 to their matchmaker. Smith says the $1,000 will be in single dollar bills to commemorate his former single status.
