Key findings include a 35 percent increase in the number of job seekers who indicate they would choose a green job over a higher-paying, non-green job.

The green job market is growing, with employment in the green job sector rising 6 percent among respondents in recent tracking surveys conducted by the employment Web site Great Green Careers.

The promising results are consistent with findings across the national job market. According to a recent report released by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), green jobs could add billions of dollars to the economy, and employ millions of workers, over the next four years. Similarly, the results of a recent Green Collar Jobs report conducted by American Solar Energy Society (ASES) indicate as many as 37 million jobs can be generated by the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries by 2030.

Key findings of the Great Green Careers surveys, conducted in June and November, include a 35 percent increase in the number of job seekers who indicate they would choose a green job over a higher-paying, non-green job, as well as an increase in the number of job seekers looking for work in the green sector.

“These findings reinforce our belief that the U.S. really is beginning to embrace a more sustainable economy and lifestyle,” says Bryan Welch, publisher and editorial director at Ogden Publications, the site’s parent company.

The most recent Great Green Careers survey was based on the responses of 467 job seekers, both registrants and visitors, who went to the Web site during October and November of this year. The first survey, conducted from late May to mid-June, was based on the responses of 487 job seekers.

Ogden Publications is the largest and longest-running publisher in the green community. The Great Green Careers Web site focuses primarily on careers in the renewable energy, environmental, clean tech and sustainable building sectors. More than one-third of Ogden’s sustainable-lifestyle audience is currently employed in green occupations.
