“When you sponsor a child with ActionAid, it’s the start of an incredible one-to-one relationship between yourself and a child living in poverty in a developing country,” said Mr Law.

ActionAid Australia has launched its child sponsorship program for Australian supporters as the charity aims to find 1,000 child sponsors in the next three months.

ActionAid child sponsorship is a unique way to help children, their families and whole communities through rights based development programs aimed at empowering communities to claim their rights.

For just over a dollar a day, ActionAid child sponsorship could bring a child an education, and help their whole community access safe clean water, nourishing food and the opportunities they need to change their future, for good.

ActionAid child sponsorship gives hope to thousands of children around the world. As a child sponsor, Australians will have the chance to help a whole community take control of their lives and end their poverty.

Sponsored children are lucky, unlike 75 million other children of primary school age, they attend school. However, their families struggle to earn an income and they often go to bed hungry.

Unless things change for these families they may not be able to continue their children’s education, and their dreams of becoming a nurse, a doctor, a person of influence may never be possible.

There are currently over 1,000 children currently in need of an Australian sponsor, according to ActionAid Australia CEO Archie Law.

“When you sponsor a child with ActionAid, it’s the start of an incredible one-to-one relationship between yourself and a child living in poverty in a developing country,” said Mr Law.

Australians can now sponsor a child with ActionAid in Cambodia and Uganda. More countries will be added as new child sponsors come on board, said Mr Law.

“But it’s not about charity, it’s about helping that child, their family and whole community end their own poverty for good by claiming their human rights,” added Mr Law.

Child sponsors receive regular progress reports and community newsletters updating them on the progress of their sponsored child and the projects ActionAid is implementing to address rights violations in the area.

Sponsors also receive a photograph of their sponsored child, updated every two years, as well as two personal messages from the child to their sponsor every year.

“Becoming a child sponsor is an incredibly rewarding experience. You learn about the challenges faced by the child you sponsor and how your donations are making a real difference to their lives,” said Mr Law.

“I don’t just recommend child sponsorship to our supporters, I sponsor a child myself,” added Mr Law.
