Chicago Technologies today announced that it is sponsoring “Supernova,” a Naperville FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) team, in its quest to advance in the Illinois FLL tournament series. “Since we’re a locally focused technology firm, it made sense to sponsor the local engineers and technologists of tomorrow,” said Chris Fuller of Chicago Technologies, Inc.

The FIRST LEGO® League is an innovative program centered on designing and programming autonomous LEGO Mindstorms robots, plus solving a real world problem through a research project. The program is intended to motivate young people to, "pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills". Every year, FLL works with experts in the field to create a mission that relates to a significant real-world issue. The end result is a two-part challenge that requires research, science and engineering to master this complex robot-based mission. “It’s a fun way to get kids excited in science and technology,” said Dennis Emge, Supernova’s coach.

Last year, Supernova, a team of Naperville youth ranging in age from 10 to 13, won the Batavia regional and llinois FLL Championship Tournaments. Winning the Illinois FLL Championship Tournament advanced the team to the International World Festival competition in Atlanta, GA, where they celebrated their accomplishment with teams from around the World.

This year, Supernova will again be advancing to the FLL Illinois State tournament after excelling at the Batavia Regional on December 19th. The team took 1st place in the technical award, 3rd place in robot performance points with 290 (highest score was 320).
