Malena Belafonte, international model, mom and original founding member of the New York private school Speyer Legacy School uprooted her family and went to Denmark to participate in Vild med Dans the Danish Version of Dancing with Stars. A fiery freestyle, an amazing Argentinian Tango and a sexy Cha Cha won Malena nothing but 10 from the judges and won her the silver in the closest race ever.
"When the producers asked me to participate in the show, I just could not see how I would be able to move across the Atlantic Ocean with a whole family, not knowing how long we would be going for. We had just launched Speyer Legacy School, my daughter just started in Kindergarten and we had so many projects on the table. But my childhood dream of becoming a dancer needed to be tended to, so we worked it out that my Danish dance partner would train me in New York and we would all go back and forth to make it work. I always wanted to learn It was not easy, by no means, but I am so happy that I got the chance, because it has been one of the best experiences in my life."
Malena Belafonte was able to win over her homeland even though she has lived in NY for 15 years and was voted through week after week while impressing the judges. She was also able to show that models can indeed dance by getting the first "full house" of the season from the judges, which means all 10s. She did so by dancing a breathtaking rumba with her partner Silas Holst who was quoted as saying: "I took myself in treating Malena like a professional dancer, she became that good. She was fearless, wanted to try anything, understood my process and we never had a fight. I will never get a partner like her again!"
"Silas is the most amazing dancer and choreographer, and unlike Dancing with the Stars in the US, we were allowed to do lifts in Denmark, so we definitely pushed the envelope where difficulty, speed and entertainment were concerned. We got thousands of mails from fans who told us they were in tears or otherwise riveted by our performances. Every dance had a story and we literally dug into our souls to tell a story so emotional that the audience would be moved."
Malena and Silas lost the gold by only a few sms votes, but put on an amazing show in the highest viewed finale show ever. "I feel that we won by reaching the finals and I am proud of our second place though I wished the gold for Silas, because he is that good! We did the best we could and the reality is it came down to a few votes and that we are happy for our fellow dancers. I won a new talent, my husband got to experience me with an 8 pack, our kids speak Danish and got to experience my family for 3 months, I got to spend the most exciting time working in my homeland, something I rarely get to do and I got a friend for life in Silas.... so I definitely won! " Malena says. When asked if her famous father-in-law Harry Belafonte came to watch the show, she says: "No, this was something I had to do for myself and by myself!"
Dance has now become such a passion for Malena Belafonte that she is planning to tour with her dance partner Silas. The couple will also perform as guest stars at the Copenhagen Open dance competition in February 2010. To watch Malena Belafonte in Dancing with the Stars/Denmark go to http://www.dans.tv2.dk
