PD-LD Contracted for $17 Million Bridge Deck Rehab Design Project Team PD-LD, Inc., the worldwide leader in Volume Bragg Grating® (VBG®) technology, has been contracted to participate in a $17.5 million bridge deck deterioration assessment and rehabilitation design project led by Rutgers University Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation. PD-LD as part of the development team will produce an Automated Nondestructive Evaluation and Rehabilitation System (ANDERS), which will cost in excess of $ 1.5 million.

PD-LD, Inc., the worldwide leader in Volume Bragg Grating® (VBG®) technology, has been contracted to participate in a $17.5 million bridge deck deterioration assessment and rehabilitation design project led by Rutgers University Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation. PD-LD as part of the development team will produce an Automated Nondestructive Evaluation and Rehabilitation System (ANDERS), which will cost in excess of $ 1.5 million.

While VBG technology is more commonly used in Raman spectroscopy, in this project PD-LD will apply it to near-infrared (NIR) spectrometry for rapid on-site analysis of corrosion and deterioration, in reinforced concrete structures.

ANDERS aims to assess one of the nation's most pressing issues identified by bridge engineers and owners - bridge deck deterioration -- reducing repair costs and increasing safety. ANDERS' monitoring, assessment and remediation resolutions will provide more detailed and comprehensive detection of early onset deterioration over traditional methods. Using both human-operated and robotic mechanisms, it will employ a mobile integrated system for nondestructive evaluation and repair of bridge decks, merging novel imaging and NDE technologies with innovative intervention approaches to arrest deterioration processes. This approach has indications for a variety of bridge types as well as other infrastructure maintenance problems.
