There may be a relaxation of the current cold pattern during January, followed by a return to more consistent colder weather in February and March. The best chance for any sustained above-normal temperatures will be across the far south of the mainland and Mediterranean.

WSI expects temperatures for the approaching period (January-March) to average colder than normal across Scandinavia, UK, and most of the mainland with the exception of the Mediterranean. "The combination of the current El Nino event, cold north Pacific, weakened stratospheric vortex, and cold mid-latitude North Atlantic sea surface temperatures are favourable for a continuation of atmospheric blocking episodes similar to the current cold pattern" said WSI seasonal forecaster Dr. Todd Crawford. "There may be a relaxation of the current cold pattern during January, followed by a return to more consistent colder weather in February and March. The best chance for any sustained above-normal temperatures will be across the far south of the mainland and Mediterranean."
