Celebrate the History of San Sebastian with a January Festival

Every year the people of San Sebastian celebrate the city's history with a new year festival.

While staying at accommodation in Bilbao (http://www.laterooms.com/en/k15767120_bilbao-hotels.aspx) in the new year, many people may be eager to visit some of the other beautiful cities in the Basque country and see what they have to offer.

If this is the case, then one event taking place in San Sebastian in January may catch their eye, as it celebrates an important time in the city's history.

The event, entitled the Festividad de San Sebastian, is held to commemorate the capture of the city by Lord Wellington from French troops back in 1812.

Residents of the city use the festival as a time to take to the streets and celebrate as only the Spanish can, with "a wild party and a holiday", Spanish Abroad reports.

It may also be the perfect opportunity for visitors to get a taste of the area's culture.

People dress up in period costumes and celebrations last well into the night as they "go berserk", the travel portal adds.

Although Wellington's initial assault on the area during the Seige of San Sebastian in July 1912 was unsuccessful, the festival celebrates his second attempt, which saw him emerge victorious, despite losing about 2,300 men.

"LateRooms urges people visiting the Festividad de San Sebastian who need hoteles en Bilbao (http://www.laterooms.com/es/k15767120_hoteles-bilbao.aspx) to book early" said LateRooms head of marketing Jess Reading.

As well as this celebration, the annual Tamborrada Drum Parade also takes place in San Sebastian on January 20, 2010.
