Since its inception, hundreds of organizations and thousands of walkers have participated in Walktober during National Walking Month. “The response has been tremendous,” notes Dean Witherspoon, President of Health Enhancement Systems. “We have corporations, hospitals, health departments, YMCAs, fitness clubs, universities, health plans, municipalities, and departments of state and federal government — all participating in this workplace wellness program. Walking is the one activity almost everyone can do; all they need is the right pair of shoes.”
The idea for a single month to highlight walking grew out of research showing consistent fitness walking produces outstanding health benefits, such as:
Health Enhancement Systems’ publication, Walking: The Health and Economic Impact, cites more than 20 peer-reviewed studies that support a comprehensive walking initiative. “The data is clear,” confirms Witherspoon. “If we can motivate people to simply double the steps they take throughout the day we can dramatically improve the health of individuals and populations.”
A new feature in 2009 is a fun team component where friends or workgroups band together to compete against others for bragging rights. “The team feature is such a popular element of our other online workplace wellness programs that we added it to Walktober… it’s amazing how a little friendly rivalry inspires even the most sedentary to get going,” Witherspoon comments.
