Those plithy quotes that are shared amongst friends can now make you profitable and get greater exposure due to a new website called Coin That Phrase.com. The site, which is just launching in the summer of 2009, encourages users to provide their favorite wit, words and phrases to Coin That Phrase. Users then access Coin That Phrase's merchandising manufacturing platform to create a range of products with that phrase (t-shirts, coffee mugs, dog tags, etc.). For all the products sold with a user's particular phrase, revenue is shared between the user and the Coin That Phrase team.

Coin That Phrase is the vision of Chicago entrepreneur Noel Burkman, who brings nearly two decades of experience in strategic planning and technology to the new venture. Burkman's vision was a new model for content ownership that finds revenue in social media and sharing.
"We noticed what makes a social network fun is the creativity that people share with each other, including clever 'tweets' and witty 'status updates'," said Burkman. "Coin That Phrase captures those creative snapshots and also provides an opportunity for revenue sharing."
Coin That Phrase maintains a huge database of quotations. Some of these are classics that have been with us for centuries such as "That's what she said," and some are created by site visitors. For a small fee, a user may add his or her original quotation into the database. When a user adds a quote to the database, they receive a time-stamped certificate commemorating that fact for the user. Users can browse and vote on quotes, participate in contests, and do all the things that form a healthy social network.
With so many clever phrases popping up online or in conversations, this is one of the first explorations into users owning the original content and language they personally generated. Coin That Phrase is a new outlet for people to capture their creative on- and offline dialogue in a unique, memorable way.
Users who affiliate with (pay an annual fee to) Coin That Phrase can then create merchandise custom-printed with their phrase, created on-demand at order time. Coin That Phrase provides printing, fulfillment, and customer service, allowing users to sell merchandise printed with their original phrases. The site shares revenue when the products sell. Users can also join the site for free to simply stake their claim to clever catch phrases and review all the sharp-witted banter.
