Contest focuses on creative reuses and recycling as ways to reduce waste.

We are excited about our partnership with Hewlett Packard on the Choose to Reuse campaign

Greenwala, the green social network, today announced the Choose to Reuse contest sponsored by Hewlett Packard (HP) and benefiting ACTERRA, a nonprofit that brings people together to create local solutions for a healthy planet.

"We are excited about our partnership with Hewlett Packard on the Choose to Reuse campaign," said Rajeev Kapur, chief wala, Greenwala. "The campaigns goal is to highlight creative reuse and recycling of everyday items that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill."

To enter the Choose to Reuse contest:

  •     Visit the contest page on Greenwala.com. Submit a photo of the most creative or innovative reuse of something you would've otherwise trashed.
  •     The most popular entry will win a new HP Mini 110 XP Notebook and a Deskjet D2660 printer.

In conjunction with the contest, HP is making a $500 donation to ACTERRA. ACTERRA was formed in 2000 by the merger of two of Northern California's most respected and effective environmental organizations: the Peninsula Conservation Center Foundation (founded in 1970) and Bay Area Action (formed in 1990). Their long history of innovation and partnership enables them to draw on the wisdom and experience of two generations of environmental leaders.

"HP is excited to sponsor this reuse-focused contest. At HP we believe that reuse is the best strategy to reduce our environmental impact. However, at some point products reach their end of life, and it is then that recycling is a key next step. At HP we have been recycling for more than 20 years, and we have learned that products need to be designed with recycling in mind. This learning has led us to design new products that are actually built with recycled materials, such as the HP DeskJet D2660 printer, which contains 50 percent recycled plastic, uses 100% recyclable packaging, and prints with HP 60 cartridge bodies, which contain at least 50 percent recycled plastic," said Christian Florensa, HP Environmental Sustainability.

The Energy Star-qualified HP Mini 110 XP Notebook includes aggressive default power management settings to help reduce power usage, both on AC and battery power. Its packaging is made in part from post consumer recycled content, and its LED screen is mercury-free.
