We know that there is a growing need to provide research based continuing education in teaching students with autism. Our online course helps meet that need.

New York state is now requiring special education teachers to receive training in the needs of students with autism. This requirement applies to applicants of special education titles on or after September 2, 2009. “ We understand that our public school teachers do their best to provide all students with the best resources and instruction available”, said Brian Stefanelli, founder and president of Education Workers Group. “ However we know that there is a growing need to provide research based continuing education in teaching students with autism. Our online course helps meet that need.”
According to the CDC an estimated 1 in 150 in the United States have an ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). There are approximately 6526 students with autism in New York city public schools alone. With the rising number of diagnosed cases of autism on the rise teaching programs across the country are redesigning their curriculum to include courses on autism.
"There has been a vast increase in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in US public schools over the last 20 years, yet teacher preparation programs have not modified their curriculums to train teachers using the existing empirically-validated teaching methodologies for individuals with an ASD. It is imperative that US public school teachers receive extensive training in research-based teaching and behavior modification procedures before they instruct individuals with an ASD in order to effectively increase academic, social and language behavior and decrease maladaptive behavior with these individuals", according to Behavior Analyst, Darlene Nigro.
Autism Spectrum Disorders, commonly abbreviated ASD, are developmental disorders characterized by impairments in social, communicative and repetitive behavior and interests. ASD's are diagnosed based on behavior displayed by individuals. There is no medical or genetic test used to diagnose individuals with ASD.
The Needs of Children with Autism online course offered by Workshops Express provides a comprehensive overview of the ASD diagnosis, including but not limited to evidence-based teaching methodologies that are effective for individuals with an ASD and positive behavior support strategies. This course should be a necessity and will greatly benefit every special education teacher and staff member that interacts with individuals with Autism.
