A compression damper is a steel tube with a smooth interior and sealed at one end. A piston with gas tight seals mounted on a shaft moves within the tube . The shaft is supported in a bushing in the open end of the tube. Dry pressurized nitrogen gas is pumped into the space ahead of the piston. The pressure of the gas determines the resistance of the device. When pressure on the piston compresses the nitrogen it raises its temperature converting the kinetic energy caused by the recoil pulse into heat energy. As the piston travels energy is continuously bled off, progressively absorbing the recoil.
