Mountains Plus Outdoor Gear was one of the first outdoor retailers to move to the Internet back in 1995. Today, Mountains Plus continues to innovate by launching an iPhone application designed to help its customers track hot deals and online specials at their main site, http://www.mpgear.com.
In Fall 2009, Mountains Plus partnered with Balanced-M to develop the application with the goal of providing customers the ability to instantly track great deals and even make purchases using their iPhone. The resulting application displays an updated list of the outdoor gear specials and allows customers to make purchases by tapping the screen, but it also allows users the ability to seamlessly spread the word using Facebook.
Mountains Plus had been evaluating mobile technologies for a while and decided to start with iPhone and Balanced-M. “We evaluated a variety of mobile technologies to use as our platform, but we decided that the ease of use and popularity of the iPhone with our customer base made it an excellent choice to move into this extension of e-commerce,” states Erik Viafore, President of MPGear. Mountains Plus ultimately partnered with Balanced-M to develop their iPhone application because of their knowledge of online retail and the quality of their product. “We chose Balanced-M because of their extensive knowledge of e-commerce and because we knew they would develop a great, high quality product,“ says Erik Viafore.
Like the iPhone, Mountains Plus’ customer base is large and very diverse. Consequently it was important to develop a product that really allowed customers to access deals on anything from great snowshoes to amazing backpacking tents, all with the flick of a thumb. Mountains Plus’ customers can now do exactly that. They can search through deals for the perfect outdoor gear, read detail product specifications, place orders and even send recommendations to friends all with a few quick taps of the screen.
“We are really excited about this new feature to offer our customers. We were one of the first online retailers to sell outdoor gear online and we see mobile commerce and the iPhone market in particular, as the next great frontier.
