MXenergy, a competitive supplier of electricity throughout the state of Massachusetts, has called on all marketers to adopt a Customer Bill of Rights.

“Consumers have a right to know what they’re buying and not to be slammed by high pressure tactics,” said Jeffrey Mayer, President and CEO of MXenergy, a national marketer of natural gas and electricity. “As volatility persists in the electricity market we want to make sure that customers don’t get hoodwinked by misleading and aggressive sales practices.”

MXenergy is one of several companies that have offers of alternative products to consumers in the National Grid/Massachusetts Electric and Western Massachusetts Electric Company utility territories. Plans include 6 or 12 month price protection products for electricity. The products work like a fixed rate mortgage, locking in consumer’s prices and protecting them from spikes in generation costs.

“Since 1999 we have served millions of homeowners and businesses around the country with price protection and other alternative products,” Mr. Mayer said. “Customers get confused when companies make false promises or misleading claims.”

The Customer Bill of Rights is an effort to “level the playing field” and ensure that “customers have a chance to make intelligence choices” of an energy supplier, Mr. Mayer added.

The Bill of Rights includes, among other things:

  •     The right to know your price before you get a bill and without hidden fees;
  •     The right to talk to a real person when you call a customer service number;
  •     The right to receive a copy of a contract in large, readable type; and
  •     The right to a phone number so you can ask questions about your bill.
