There are an estimated 20,000 tattoo parlors in the U.S., with an average of a new one opening every day. The FDA estimates that 45 million Americans have at least one tattoo, while the FDA and the American Society of Dermatological Surgery state that 50% of individuals with tattoos eventually grow dissatisfied and want them removed. The tattoo industry, application and removal, is strong. Also strong is the franchise business model, which statistically is the least risky way to start and own a small business. “I always thought if the right technique came along to remove tattoos, it would be something I’d want to do,” states Dr. Phil Knall of Tattoo Removal America. “After considerable research, combining the new laser technology with distributorship opportunities was like finding a safe harbor, even amidst a recessionary storm. Today, laser tattoo removal is a rapidly growing industry with minimal competition.”

“Tattoo shops appear to be recession-proof,” states Michael Clancy of the Republic/azcentral.com. “More shops have received special permits to open in Phoenix in the past two years than in the previous three years combined.” Recent tattoo statistics are scarce, but a 2006 study by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that one-quarter of Americans aged 18 to 50 have tattoos. As the number of tattoo applications increases in Phoenix and across the country, so does the number of people wanting their tattoos removed.

“Sarah is one of my clients,” states Knall, “who got her tattoo early in life and didn’t really think through the design. Now that she’s older, she finds it a hindrance and wants it removed. People’s lives and preferences change over time, constituting an ever-increasing reason for tattoo removal.” Tattoos also fade. Other reasons include: an unwanted name or memory due to a changed relationship; military enlistment; wanting to clear the space for a new tattoo; and needing to remove visibly-placed tattoos for job interviews and meaningful employment. In addition, some doctors refuse to give epidurals during child birth if the mother has a tattoo on her lower back, from fear the ink will be pushed into the spinal column. Laser tattoo removal procedures, regardless of the reason, is becoming one of the fastest growing areas of the dermatological industry. Approximately 20% of all laser procedures performed over the past two years were for tattoo removal.

“Tattoo Removal America (http://www.tattooremovalaz.com) offers a unique franchising opportunity in a growing market,” says Knall. According to AzFranchises.com, the franchise industry accounts for nearly 50% of all retail sales in the U.S. and approximately one out of every 12 businesses in the U.S. is a franchise. In 2000, the median gross annual income of franchisees was between $75,000 and $124,000, with over 30% earning over $150,000 per year.

AzFranchises.com lists the following primary reasons for the high degree of franchise successes:

1.    Minimized risk. Multiple studies have shown that the success rate of franchised businesses after 5 years is 90%. The success rate of new start-up businesses after 5 years, however, is only 10%.
2.     Established products and service. A franchised business generally offers a product or service that has been tested, validated and successfully sold in the marketplace.
3.    Proven business models. Franchise business models generally include operating and management systems, as well as uniform operational standards and procedures.
4.    Brand recognition. New franchise owners have instant brand name recognition.

In December 2009, the International Franchise Association (IFA) estimated marginal growth in 2010 of jobs, economic output and the number of franchised establishments. They forecast a 2% increase over 2009 in franchised businesses from 883,292 to 901,093, a net gain of 18,000 establishments.

The gross value of goods and services produced by franchise businesses is also expected to increase by 2.8% in 2010, to $868.3 billion, an increase of $23.6 billion over 2009. The IFA goes on to say that the fastest growing sector with regard to economic output in 2010 will be in the personal services arena.

“Tattoo Removal America is a ‘niche, low overhead’ franchise opportunity in an ever-expanding industry,” says Knall. “We provide a complete start-up package to every franchisee and teach everything they need to know in order to run their own tattoo removal business. Our experienced professionals have expertise in aesthetic technology, medical procedures, business development, marketing and compliance. Tattoo removal is not something we do,” concludes Knall, “It’s the only thing we do!”
