All too often, new products don’t live up to expectations—or worse, upset the skin. It’s also common for tried-and-true products to stop delivering positive results. When a person’s skincare and beauty routine stalls, there are a variety of ways to revive it, from learning how to use products correctly to maintaining healthy habits and realistic expectations. Find out why a person’s skincare stops working (or never started) with this excerpt from Skincare-News.com’s latest article, “10 Reasons Why Your Products Aren’t Working.”
1. The products are so last season. The environment can greatly affect a person’s skin, so each season may call for a switch. For instance, the old routine may work perfectly in the summer but turn ineffective or even harsh in the winter. Cold weather brings lower levels of air moisture, which can produce drier skin. When skin doesn’t retain moisture as sufficiently, people need a heavier moisturizer and a creamier cleanser. During hot summer months, skin is more prone to excess oil or breakouts. Instead, choose lighter products — like a gel or foam cleanser, a lotion instead of a cream — and keep blotting papers handy.
2. The products have expired. All skincare and beauty products have an expiration date. And when they go bad, they can stop working, or worse, cause an irritating reaction or infection. So if the cleanser that worked for countless months seems to have stopped working suddenly, it could be that it’s past its prime. With some acne ingredients, the opposite can occur, though the end result is the same — irritated skin. When acne-fighting formulas spoil, their potency swells. Overall, if a trusty, typically effective skincare routine has stopped performing, check the expiration dates.
3. The products can’t get through. No matter how effective a product is, it won’t be of any help if the ingredients are unable to penetrate into the skin. If a person isn’t regularly exfoliating the skin, dead skin cells start to clump together, forming a barrier that prevents skincare products from being absorbed. Fortunately, people can break down this barrier and improve the efficacy of their beauty products by using a gentle physical (also known as mechanical) or chemical exfoliant, such as a facial scrub with jojoba beads or alpha hydroxy acids.

Exfoliation sloughs off dead skin to reveal healthier, newer cells. This leads to a luminous, younger-looking complexion and helps skin absorb moisturizers and other products. Exfoliants are generally classified as physical or chemical. Physical exfoliants use abrasive ingredients to remove dead skin cells, while chemical exfoliants use enzymes or acids. The ideal exfoliant—and how often to use it—depends on a person’s individual skin type.
