Visit Kuala Lumpur for the Thaipusam Celebrations

On February 6th, a procession of more than one million people will leave the centre of the Malaysian capital and walk to the Batu Caves, which traditionally serves as the focus of the Thaipusam festivities.

Located about nine miles north of the city, the caves are a popular attraction for people staying in Kuala Lumpur hotels (http://www.asiarooms.com/malaysia/kuala_lumpur.html), as the limestone from which they are formed is believed to be approximately 400 million years old.

An elaborate complex of temples is built into the caves, while the world's tallest statue of the Hindu deity Lord Muruga is located just outside.

The Thaipusam procession is led from Kuala Lumpur by an image of this god, which is then carried up the 272 steps to the temple entrance.

Devotees carry offerings to Muruga, usually in the form of containers filled with milk known as 'kavadi'.

According to travel guide Frommer's, the festival atmosphere is enhanced by "crowds of onlookers, constant drumming and food stalls" situated around the caves during Thaipusam.

In 2007, the festival is said to have attracted over 1.5 million pilgrims.
