The Food Bank for Westchester, which is celebrating its 20th year of fighting hunger in Westchester, received $1,680 from Peapod’s Refer-a-Friend Charity Program. The initiative by Peapod, the leading online grocery service, helped shoppers save money on groceries while making a donation to the Food Bank for Westchester.

Peapod donated $10 to the Food Bank for Westchester for every current and new customer that referred a friend to try the Peapod service. Both those that referred and tried the service for the first time also earned a $10 discount for their own grocery orders.

“The initiative by Peapod enabled us to feed 6,000 nutritious meals to hungry families in Westchester during the holidays,” said Christina Rohatynskyj, Executive Director of the Food Bank for Westchester. “We are so grateful for their support.”

Food banks across the country are struggling to meet the increasing demand from the communities they serve. According to a survey by The Chronicle of Philanthropy, many charities are seeing a decline in donations by 10 percent or more. According to Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger relief charity, food banks have seen an increase in demand by 30 percent compared to last year.

“We are humbled by the outpouring of support from our customers. With their help, we are thrilled to make this donation,” said Peg Merzbacher, director of marketing for Peapod. “We hope our contribution will make a difference for those struggling in our communities during this difficult time.”
