It is rare indeed for any book to sell 100,000 copies, but rarer still when that book happens to be unabashedly Catholic and written by a priest. Yet on January 20, less than four years after publication, that's exactly what happened: My Life with the Saints by James Martin, SJ (Loyola Press, paperback, $15.95), hit the 100,000-copies-sold mark.
The witty and fascinating 432-page memoir chronicles Martin's lifelong encounters with some surprising friends--the saints of the Catholic Church. From Peter to Pedro Arrupe, Joseph to Joan of Arc, Martin shares how the saints have been so much more to him than just plastic statues; they have been like personal friends, always there for him when he needed them most.
From the first day it was published in March 2006, My Life with the Saints showed great promise. "The first orders from the chains were solid, and the reorders started coming in pretty quickly. While most books' sales tend to slow down after the first year or so, Fr. Martin's book has posted steady and significant sales throughout its four years of publication," says Sharon Roth, trade sales representative for Loyola Press. My Life with the Saints is in select company--a general rule of thumb in the book industry is that any title selling 20,000 or more copies in a year is easily in the top 1% of all books sold.
Much of the book's success is due to Martin's passion for talking about the saints at every opportunity--from Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor to Comedy Central's irreverent The Colbert Report. "Many authors, though they can write well, don't do well in media appearances. This is not the case with Fr. Martin," says Roth. "He is at ease, articulate, and humorous when talking with any member of the press. And no matter the topic that the media is addressing, he always finds a way to tie his book in to the discussion."
In addition to attaining stellar sales levels, My Life with the Saints also has received many awards, including the Christopher Award and the Catholic Press Association Book Award. In 2006, it was named one of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of the Year.
Martin, who lives in New York City, serves as the culture editor for America magazine, the national Catholic weekly. He is the author or editor of many other books, including A Jesuit Off-Broadway and Celebrating Good Liturgy.
