“EMDR is an effective way of eliminating stress surrounding traumatic memories and emotionally charged issues that may be difficult to even talk about,” Ms. Fulmer says.

Previously the clinical supervisor at the Woodmont Hills Counseling Center in Nashville, Sonja Fulmer brings a wealth of experience to her new Brentwood, TN, counseling office.

“In my practice, I use a variety of therapy techniques to help clients work through issues that may be interfering with living a healthy, full life. My goal is to provide my clients with a safe, constructive environment where they can find solutions and bring about positive change.”

Ms. Fulmer specializes in a treatment called EMDR, which enables clients to release emotionally charged memories.    As one of only a few counselors who have been certified for EMDR in Nashville, she has been using the technique for a number of years with great success.

EMDR stands for Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.    The process begins with alternate stimulation of the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This is accomplished by using left/right eye movements, ear tones or tactile pulses, depending on the client’s preference.    The “desensitization” takes place when the memory is moved to a more adaptive part of the brain where it can be re-experienced from a less emotional place. The final phase involves “reprocessing” which is the replacement of negative beliefs associated with traumatic memories with more healthy positive beliefs. The result is that painful memories are exchanged for more peaceful, resolved feelings.

“EMDR is an effective way of eliminating stress surrounding traumatic memories and emotionally charged issues that may be difficult to even talk about,” Ms. Fulmer says.

Discovered in 1987, much research has been conducted on EMDR over the last 20 years validating the effectiveness of this treatment. In fact, the Department of Defense has been using it to treat post traumatic stress disorder (or “PTSD”) for years.

“While it’s an effective means for treating PTSD, I also use it to for a variety of issues or other types of traumatic memories.” Ms. Fulmer adds, “EMDR can help with symptoms such as anxiety, depression, abandonment, guilt, shame, distrust, grief, loss, phobias, and anger.”

While Ms. Fulmer brings a host of therapies to her Brentwood, TN, counseling office, she is one of the few who specializes in EMDR in Nashville.
